The Gran Risa ski slope often appears in the ski media all over the world.
And it really deserves this attention!
Gran Risa – Alta Badia. A legendary ski slope
Known as one of the most spectacular ski slopes, since 1985 the Gran Risa represents one of the legendary stages of the alpine Ski World Cup. Located on the northern side of the Piz La Ila, the start of the Gran Risa ski-slope is at the altitude of 2077 m and winds to the foot of the village of La Villa.
Our love for the Gran Risa
We in Val Badia have great affection for the Gran Risa.
The track embodies the dynamic spirit of our people, always ready to express the best, who love the pleasure of competing and who know how to recognize with a smile the value of those who want the best from themselves. It is a way of life, which our coaches teach our little ones when they approach sports, skiing and competitions. A style that recognizes and supports the value of those who want to succeeed.
Hence, the Gran Risa has become over time the “temple” of skiing that has made Val Badia even more famous in the world.
The characteristics of the Dolomites
The Gran Risa is a special descent: its exposure to the sun is minimal because it passes through the woods before arriving at the village of La Villa. With its 650 meters in altitude, it winds along the less sunny side of Piz la Ila, a mountain that lies north of Corvara. As a result, the track keeps perfect snow conditions, almost always compact, even where the slope is high. These snow characteristics make the descent one of the most challenging and spectacular of the alpine Ski World Cup circuit.
Gran Risa and Giant Slalom
The Gran Risa was conceived as a slope dedicated to the most classic alpine skiing discipline, the giant slalom. 1255 meters long, the track has an average gradient of 36% that goes up to a “wall” where the slope reaches up to 63%, a slope that will put even the most experienced skiiers to the test, challenging some of the best athletes in the world.
To celebrate skiing in its most dynamic and lively expression, in 2005 the famous “gobès del giàt” (cat humps), 150 meters high, were created on the final stretch. Hence this giant slalom classic descent has been certified by FIS (International Ski Federation) as a track for the special slalom.
A world-class track
The Gran Risa has consecrated over time the recognition of champions of skiing. Aberto Tomba won 4 times on this descent, a record surpassed only by Marcel Hirscher who won it 7 times in a row, setting a new record in 2018. Today the legendary Gran Risa has also become a tourist attraction, a “must-do” for every expert skier.
